SPILLPOINT

Terms of use

Short, because the short version is the true version. Last changed 2026-09-27.

What this is

Spillpoint is a reading of public registers. It takes data that European public bodies already publish — the Water Framework Directive returns, the Bathing Water Directive results, the industrial emissions register, the offshore and grid inventories — and draws it as one map you can move around and play against.

It is not an authority, it does not inspect anything, and it does not issue findings. Every classification you see is the one the responsible member state reported. Where a figure is ours rather than theirs — a ranking, a count, a gap between two registers — the page says so.

What it is not for

Do not use Spillpoint for any decision where being wrong hurts someone or costs money. It is not a health warning, not a swimming advisory, not a flood or contamination assessment, and not advice about a property, a purchase or a legal claim. If an official notice disagrees with this site, the official notice is right.

Spillpoint deliberately does not assess individual addresses and never will. It will not tell you whether a particular house, plot or business is at risk, and it does not accept enquiries from anyone building a claim against an operator or an authority. If that is what you came for, this is the wrong site.

Before you swim anywhere, read the sign at the beach and the current notice from the authority that manages it. A classification on this map covers a bathing season that has already ended; it says nothing about the water today.

Why places and operators are named

Sites appear here under the names their own operators reported to a public register, with the figures those operators reported, next to the reporting thresholds set in law. Nothing on this site alleges that anyone has broken a rule. A quantity above a reporting threshold is a quantity that had to be reported — that is what the threshold is for — and it is not an accusation of wrongdoing.

If something here is wrong

Tell us and it gets fixed. Write to hello@spillpoint.earth with the place and what is wrong with it. If the error is ours, it is corrected as soon as we can and the correction is noted. If the error is in the source register, we will say so on the record and point at the register, because we cannot change what a member state reported — that has to be corrected with them, and we will tell you who to ask.

Your account

Keep your sign-in link to yourself; anyone holding it can open your account for the thirty minutes it lives. Do not use the sign-in form to send links to addresses that are not yours. Do not use another person’s account, and do not run more than one account to move yourself up the leaderboard — scores found to be built that way are removed.

What you send us

Pictures and captions you submit stay yours. By sending one you give us permission to show it on this site next to the place it shows, and nothing more — we do not license it on, and we do not sell it.

Send only pictures you took yourself, of the place you are at. Do not send pictures of identifiable people without their agreement, and do not send anything unlawful, threatening, or intended to harass a person or a business.

Every picture is looked at by a person before anyone else sees it. We aim to clear the queue within 72 hours, and while the queue is held by one moderator it may occasionally take longer; a picture that has been waiting more than a week has almost certainly been missed, so write and say so. Anything that breaks the rule above is refused, and we may close the account that sent it. You can have your own picture taken down at any time by asking.

Reports of a mistake on the map are welcome, and each is read by a person. By sending one you let us use what it says to correct the map. A correction is ours, shown as coming from player reports, and does not change or speak for the official record it sits on. We may decline a report without giving a reason. Points for an approved report are part of the game, not payment.

The data, and re-using it

The underlying data comes from the bodies named at the foot of the map, under their own licences: European Environment Agency and EMODnet material under CC-BY 4.0, Copernicus EU-Hydro under its own terms, Eurostat GISCO boundaries under CC-BY (© EuroGeographics), OpenStreetMap-derived layers under ODbL 1.0, and Natural Earth in the public domain. It is modified by us.

Quote this site and link to it freely. Do not re-publish the underlying provider data as though it were yours, because their licences, not ours, govern that — and the ODbL layers in particular carry share-alike conditions.

Spillpoint Plus

Plus costs €2.99 a month or €24.99 a year, VAT included. The price you see on the payment page is the price you pay.

You pay in advance for each month or year, and the plan renews on its own until you cancel. Cancel any time from the account panel: Plus keeps running to the end of the period you have paid for and is not charged again. Periods already started are not refunded, except as below.

Changing your mind. Within 14 days of first subscribing you can withdraw and get all of that first payment back: write to hello@spillpoint.earth from the address on the account. You do not have to give a reason.

If the price changes, you are told by email at least 30 days before the renewal it applies to, and you can cancel before then. If a renewal payment fails, Stripe retries for a while; if it still fails, Plus ends and the account carries on as a free one. Payment is handled by Stripe; your card details never reach Spillpoint.

Availability, and no warranty

The service is provided as it is, with no guarantee that it is available, complete, current or correct, and with no guarantee that any particular layer will keep existing. The bodies that publish the source data accept no liability for errors or omissions in it, for its availability, or for any loss arising from its use. Neither do we, to the fullest extent the law allows. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Changes, and ending it

If these terms change materially, the change is dated on this page before it takes effect. You can delete your account whenever you like from the account panel. We can close an account that keeps breaking the rules above, and we will say why.
